"Growing up in Houston, my family wasn't immersed in Latin American culture. My siblings and I found our culture on MTV, music magazines and TV shows. We grew up very Americanized, but there were always things I looked forward to. My family would take road trips down to Mexico to visit relatives. At the border, we used to buy candy from the street vendors, who were mostly children.
Whenever we would go to the grocery store, Fiesta, I would want to grab a Jarritos soda or a new package of Lucas. These are the little things that I associated with being a Latino.
We watched movies that depicted Chicanos in the 70's or 80's, but that wasn't really part of our upbringing. We took things we enjoyed from those movies and made them ours. Food was the one staple that kept my family culture intact. The richness, the history and the dulce!
This exhibition is about reminding ourselves that our culture has come a long way and is ever-changing. But, if you ask most Hispanic adults about Lucas, Jarritos or other Mexican candies; they know exactly what you're talking about. Nostalgia can simply remind of you something or can make re-evaluate the importance it has on your life. Food is truly important in the way it can create culture and identity. Sweet memories is just a taste of influences in my life that have shaped me to the person I am today."
The exhibition will include drawings, mixed-media paintings, sculpture and candy!
