Today I started my first day of graduate school at the University of Texas at San Antonio. While graduate school is not necessary for every artist's career. It has something I've wanted to do for a long time. My grandmother, who passed away 9 years ago, used to tell how important school is. She used to tell me that I should go as far as I could with my education.
My education just happens to be about art. I'm looking forward to working alongside a new group of artists, that includes fellow graduates and professors. It also puts me in a new city, with a completely different art community.
I am going headstrong this first semester. I am signed up for 3 studio classes: Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture. I will continue to elaborate on recent bodies of work while at the same time exploring new methods of creating.
I feel that this environment will push me to create work I've been thinking about for a long time. I have had several large scale projects waiting to come to life. They've been hanging around as just words in my notebooks and sketch pads. So far, the San Antonio art community has seemed very welcoming.
Prior to school starting, I have had work in a group show and artwork now on view at San Antonio's City Hall and Municipal Plaza.
I also recently dropped off artwork to juried at San Anto Cultural Arts. They are hosting an event, "Huevos Rancheros" Breakfast Gala, which will include a silent auction that benefits the organization. Nothing is guaranteed, but I have a good feeling my piece will be included.
I have several shows coming up and all my studio time will be utilized to create new work!
